Daily Neuromuscular Support with Neuro-Plex EQ Powder
Neuromuscular support is essential for an increasing number of horses. Ever since BioStar introduced Neuro-Plex EQ paste syringes for as-needed use, we have had an incredible response from customers; many owners and riders have thanked us and told us how well their horses are doing on Neuro-Plex paste!
Many have asked us for a daily formula to help horses undergoing EPM and Lyme treatments, as well as for support after treatment.
We now introduce Neuro-Plex EQ powder, recommended for supporting horses with neuromuscular disorders, nervous system imbalances, muscle tremors, or unsteady balance.
Similar, but different
While most of the ingredients in Neuro-Plex paste are also in Neuro-Plex powder, there are a couple of differences:
- We’ve formulated Neuro-Plex powder with eggshell membrane collagen because of its long list of benefits.
- Our paste formula contains BioStar’s Sym-Biota — a liquid ingredient that blends perfectly with a paste, but not as well in a powdered formula. Therefore Neuro-Plex powder doesn’t include Sym-Biota, but it can be given separately.
Why collagen?
Collagens are the main structural element of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Cellular interaction depends on the ECM, which is also critical in tissue development, regeneration, and maintaining homeostasis.
Research has shown that ECM components, including collagen, are essential for the development of the neuromuscular junction. ECM proteins can promote the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that hydrolyzes acetylcholine into acetic acid and choline, helps return nerve cells to rest after activation, and leads to the relaxation of muscle fiber.1
Why we use eggshell membrane collagen
- Eggshell membrane collagen is a native collagen that the immune system recognizes as an endogenous substance, and therefore requires a lower dose for efficacy.
- Our native collagen is produced in Spain with water and mechanical presses — not with chemical processing.
- Eggshell membrane collagen provides collagen type 1, type V, type X, fibronectin, chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, elastin, and keratin.
- Collagen supports the ECM and its role in the neuromuscular junctions.
- Supports homeostasis of the GI tract because it is linked to the ECM.
- Collagen’s major amino acids glycine, glutamine, proline, and hydroxyproline can support the endothelial tissues in the GI tract and help reduce intestinal inflammation.

How the neuromuscular system functions
Support for the brain, neurons, and nerve fibers is important when faced with neuromuscular challenges. The brain is like a computer that controls the body’s functions. The brain and the nervous system send messages to the muscles through a network of nerve fibers. We see the development of neuromuscular disorders when these communication pathways stop working correctly.
The role of stress
Stress not only affects the functioning of the nervous system and brain, but also the GI tract and the immune system. While stress may not be directly involved in neuromuscular health issues, relapse, particularly from EPM and Lyme disease, is often brought on by stress.
More on neuromuscular support from Neuro-Plex EQ paste!
Neuro-plex powder supports equine neuromuscular health with:
Lion’s Mane – supports nerve protection, particularly in the brain and spinal cord. Lion’s Mane stimulates the synthesis of nerve growth factors, promoting the process of myelination, essential for signal transmission between neurons and the entire central nervous system, central and peripheral. Myelin is the protective layer that forms around all nerves.
Sunflower lecithin – the most bioavailable form of choline, and the precursor to acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter and neuromodulator which drives neurons of the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Bacopa (Brahmi in Ayurveda) – supports rejuvenation by increasing acetylcholine levels, and is neuroprotective.
Haritaki – a rejuvenating plant in Ayurveda used traditionally as a tonic for stress and GI tract support. It is known to boost prana and chi, the life force.
Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero) – provides neuroprotective actions through its antioxidant mechanisms, helps reduce oxidative stress, and supports acetylcholine function. Eleuthero has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine.
Eggshell membrane collagen – the most bioavailable source of collagen, providing the main element of the extracellular matrix (ECM). ECM is necessary for regenerating tissues, which in turn supports the gut, muscles and connective tissues.
Indian Gooseberry (Amalaki) – supports a healthy immune system, digestion, and circulation. It also promotes increased acetylcholine production. Amalaki is a celebrated Ayurvedic adaptogen and potent rejuvenator.
Bovine colostrum – supports a healthy immune system. Our colostrum is 38% IgG, with a high concentration of IgA as well.
Holy Basil (Tulsi) – a revered Ayurvedic adaptogen which helps balance the body under stress by supporting the glandular, endocrine, and circulatory systems.
Shilajit (purified extract) – supports the mitochondria of the cells, providing energy for important cellular functions including muscle contraction, nerve impulse conduction, and metabolism.
Safe with medications
Neuro-Plex EQ powder can be given with medications containing ponazuril (Marquis®, or Protazil®), with medications containing sulfadiazine sodium with pyrimethamine (Rebalance®), or with doxycycline for horses with Lyme. It can also be given after medication therapy to support the horse after treatment.
